Where
you sleep

An honest standard. In Addis you can have international comfort. Outside it, the best room in each place is often simple, and we would rather tell you now.

Below is the kind of place we use in each area. Your proposal names each property and shows recent photographs of it.

The stays

Addis Ababa · City hotel

A garden hotel in the city

Addis Ababa: the area around the stay

A quiet city hotel with a garden, close enough to the museums and far enough from the traffic. Our standard for Addis: reliable hot water, a good breakfast, a driver at the door.

The photograph shows the area, not the property.

Harar · Guesthouse in a Harari house

A courtyard house by the old walls

Harar: the area around the stay

A family house inside or beside the old walls, with painted rooms around a courtyard. Simple, characterful, and the best way to sleep in Harar.

The photograph shows the area, not the property.

Bale Mountains · Mountain lodge

A lodge below the plateau

Bale Mountains: the area around the stay

A lodge at about 3,000 metres, with fires in the evenings and early breakfasts for the plateau. Expect thick blankets rather than heating.

The photograph shows the area, not the property.

Kaffa · Simple guesthouse

A rest house at the forest edge

Clean, basic rooms at the forest edge. The rooms are plain; the coffee is not.

Rift Valley lakes · Lake hotel

A hotel on the lake shore

Rift Valley lakes: the area around the stay

A garden hotel on the shore of Lake Hawassa, with birds at breakfast and the fish market a short walk away.

The photograph shows the area, not the property.

Konso & the Omo · Lodge and tented rooms

Stone rooms over the terraces

Stone and thatch rooms looking over the terraces, and simple tented rooms further south. Generators run in the evenings only.

02 · Our standard

Clean, safe, quiet and run by people who know the place. Not always luxurious, never pretending.

We visit every place we use, and we tell you what to expect: where water is solar-heated, where power runs on a generator for a few hours, where the walls are thin. If a room fails our standard, we stop using it.

In Bale and the Omo, nights can be cold or hot and the rooms basic. We pick them for position and for the people who run them.

About the rooms

Why are the hotels not named here?

The right room depends on your dates and on what is open that season. Your proposal names each property and shows recent photographs, so you know exactly where you will sleep before you book.

Are there luxury options?

In Addis, yes. Outside Addis the choice is smaller; we will always show you the best available and be clear about what it is.
